Starting dance classes is an exciting milestone for any child. Whether your little one has been begging to dance or you're gently introducing them to the world of movement, here's how to ensure they have the best possible first experience.
What to Wear
Comfortable clothing is key for your child's first dance class. Here's what we recommend:
- Ballet: Leotard with ballet slippers (or bare feet for beginners)
- Jazz: Fitted t-shirt and leggings with jazz shoes or bare feet
- Hip Hop: Comfortable activewear with clean sneakers
- Creative Movement: Any comfortable clothing they can move freely in
Hair should be tied back neatly to keep it out of their face during movement.
What to Bring
Pack a small bag with these essentials:
- A water bottle
- A small healthy snack for after class
- Any required dance shoes
- A light jacket for the journey home
Preparing Emotionally
Some children jump right into new activities, while others need more time to warm up. Here's how to help:
Before Class Day
- Talk positively about dance and what they might learn
- Watch age-appropriate dance videos together
- Practice some simple movements at home
- Visit the studio beforehand if possible to familiarise them with the space
On the Day
- Arrive 10-15 minutes early to settle in
- Introduce yourself and your child to the teacher
- Let them know you'll be watching and cheering them on
- Reassure them that it's okay if they don't get everything right the first time
Managing First-Day Nerves
It's completely normal for children to feel nervous. Our experienced teachers are trained to help anxious beginners feel welcome and included. If your child is particularly shy:
- Stay for the first few classes if the studio allows
- Celebrate small victories ("You remembered to point your toes!")
- Focus on the fun aspects rather than perfection
- Be patient – some children take a few classes to fully participate
After Class
The first class is just the beginning! Here's how to reinforce a positive experience:
- Ask what their favourite part was
- Praise their effort and bravery in trying something new
- Practice some of the movements together at home
- Mark the next class on the calendar to build anticipation
What to Expect in the First Few Weeks
Most children need 3-4 classes to really settle in. During this time, they'll:
- Learn basic positions and terminology
- Begin to follow instructions in a group setting
- Start developing coordination and body awareness
- Make new friends who share their interest in dance
Remember, every child develops at their own pace. The most important thing is that they enjoy themselves and develop a love for movement that can last a lifetime.
